why/where/when would you create a manual inventory item as opposed to just a manual asset?
Trying to figure out the purpose of manual inventory items? Why create one when assets is manual info?

Hello,
the difference is that if you create a new Device asset (Asset -> New -> Device) you can only set some fields information and not fill all the fields of a typical machine in the inventory.
Instead using the Inventory -> New -> Manual Device you can fill manually most of the field of a typical computer asset.
Using that menu you can even upload a XML that represent a computer inventory and that could be useful for some integration with devices where you cannot or do not want to install the inventory: you can create your own XML file and then upload it there as manual device.
It is even possible to upload the XML file programmatically using the K1000 API (WSAPI).
