What is the installer\GUID folder for

Hi there.
Out of curiousity I have done some googling on the following directory,
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Installer\{GUID}
I havent found much information on the actual use of this directory when an
application is installed.
Can anyone provide me with some information regarding, why this directory is generally created at installation?
Thank you very much,
Kind regards :)
