What are Type Libs?

I've been having problems with TLB files lately..
Problem is, I have no idea what they do or what they're for.
I've been searching google but I cannot seem to fiure out what they do and if/how the shoudl be registered..
Could someone enlighten me on the typelib stuff or link me to some pages?
