Specific Users experience Slow Login on XP, but no issues on Windows 7?

I am finding specific domain users endure ~15 minute login to XP machines, but have no issue logging onto Windows 7. Other users are able to login to these XP machine swithout issue.

When the affected user logs onto an XP machine, it will be stuck at the status "Loading Personal Settings"

An xp built from installation media experiences this problem for only this set of users.

The users don't seem to share anything in common. We have tested by removing all Group Policy settings except those in default domain policy.

Anybody have any idea what could possibly be happening here?

Answer Summary:
Issue was resolved by firewall change and server reboot. It is unknown exactly what was going on.

This could be due to network issue..

  • When this happened to me, what I did is I just pluged out the network cable and pluged in again.. It worked for me.. :) - jagadeish 11 years ago

Are these existing profiles or new ones.  Are they mapping any drives in thier login.bat.

Comments:
  • if you have recently went from 2003 DC's to 2008r2 try setting Under Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->System-->Logon, change "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" to ENABLED - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
  • Either existing or new profiles behave the same for these specific users. They fail to map their drives when they eventually log on, other users don't have that issue.

The "Always wait for..." setting is enabled. - muebel 11 years ago
  • With one of these users can you temporarily remove any settings under their profile tab and make sure local path is selected in AD and see if it changes. - SMal.tmcc 11 years ago
  • Depending on your specific login scripts (if any) and your AD site configuration, this could boil down to a DNS issue. Windows 7 is a bit more tolerant at boot and login issues than Windows XP is. You should check the system log on the affected client systems for entries related to GPO or Login. Post relevent Event IDs here. - matthall 11 years ago
