Have you set the following registry value?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Apple Computer, Inc.\QuickTime\ActiveX]
"AlwaysReclaimAssocations"=dword:00000002 (note the misspelling of "Assocations")Although, I guess this only affects the reclaiming of associations by the plugins, which I'm guessing is not your problem...
