Office 2003 SP2 Upgrade

Gidday folks,

I've got the task of upgrading our Office installation from 2003 SP1 to 2003 SP2 (on our XP SP2 and XP SP1 boxes). However I've struck a small problem in that the O2K3 SP2 upgrade won't uninstall the O2K3 SP1 version and displays a message box asking the user to remove existing Office installation in Add/Remove Programs.

I'm using the CIW to generate the mst file and I have the Previous Versions configured to 'Remove All' (Dialog 6/24). Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas?

Also the Office 2003 SP2 upgrade requires installer version 3.1, how do I add it to my mst, so that it is upgraded on our XP SP1 boxes with version 2.0 as well? Should it be applied before the msi runs?

Thanks in advance,
Wayne

Hi Wayne:

Why not slipstream Office 2003 with Sp2, so whenever the office 2003 is installed it will be installed with SP2 and then rollout the same in your company, what say?

Thanks for the reply Bhupesh,

The upgrade is the issue here, within a lock down environment with an existing 1000 PC's already installed with Office 2003 SP1.
Deployment of the O2K3SP2 upgrade is going to be through SMS.

My problem is that the Office 2003 SP2 upgrade will not simply upgrade the Office 2003 SP1 installation within the MSI. It prompts for the removal of the previous version of Office 2003 before the MSI will install Office 2003 SP2. Which our users cannot do.
I can get it to run on the command line:
msiexec.exe /I "My_Network_Path\PRO11.MSI" /qr TRANSFORMS="My_Network_Path\O2K3SP2.MST" REINSTALL="ALL" REINSTALLMODE="vomu" UPGRADEWITHRECACHE="TRUE" RESIGNDPC="TRUE"

Looking at the logs, the command line Properties overwrite the MST properties. However if these properties are added within the MST they are not recognised. I'm looking into the logs of each installation to see if I can glean some sense out of it all. I would be really surprised if I was the only one with this issue.

Thanks again
Wayne

I'm assuming you downloaded the fullfile version of the sp2.exe?

We had about 7000+ machines to hit here, and patch our original source for new installs. For older installs, we just went and advertised the fullfile.exe to all of our users and let them have at it. I suppose if you wanted to make it silent you could just:

1) patch/slipstream your source (admin install point)
2) have your sms package run the pro11.msi w/ REINSTALL="ALL" REINSTALLMODE="vomu" /qb+

I guess I don't understand why you are having to uninstall office at all, the downloadable fullfile of sp2 is deployable to existing installs, and you can also slipstream it into your AIP.

is the link for the fullfile sp2 exe.

Thanks Andypern,

We are already slipstreaming our AIP.

We have a transform file which is not being applied if the msi runs an upgrade. The original transform file (and settings) remain and are not overwritten in:
c:\Windows\Installer\{90110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}

Our transform has some security changes in it, so even though the upgrade to O2K3SP2 is successful the changes from the transform are not applied unless you uninstall O2K3SP1 and then reinstall O2K3SP2. This also will remove any Office customisations that have been set, I would like to make the transition a little easier on our users (read 'reduce the grumblings' [8D])

Thanks again for the reply,

Anyone any tips on how i go about splistreaming SP2 into our group policy office 2003 setup.

After several weeks of messing around i have eventually managed to get a silent install going.

Cheers

Check out this Web Site for a detailed description of how to slipstream Office Service Packs.

Hope this helps

Hi Wayne,
this sounds to me, if you are using a different flavor of O2k3 (like: installed is STD version and now you are trying to upgrade with the PRO version). Please check if you really have the same product codes on the installed version and the one you are trying to install.

Regards, Nick
