This is a rather new problem, I started to experience with the ad aware 07 (new ad aware version). It also seems to be a problem linked to resident protectors, such as avg spyware free & ad aware & spybot s & d. With my instances where this occured, it happens in safe & reg mode, when re-installing ad aware. My spybot is cracked, with no real fix available. This problem of my windows installer service not being properly registered error seemed to run alongside a "compression bomb", that was mostly inert, somehow initially linked to It seems this keylogger is taking priority over associated anti-keylogger programs. But I am running 2000 sp4, and use only freeware, so I'm more at risk.
You know whats funny. When I search for anti-keyloggers, etc, sponsored links on tops of pages are for guaranteed to work keyloggers..... "create the problem, sell the solution". I only trust freeware.

remember to use spybot s & d. It has a resident registry protector shield called the "tea timer". Also constantly updated anti-trojan & spyware immunization features, as well as the most encompassing anti-anything search features (this is the main feature). There is check for registry inconcstncys & broken links. Also there is a secure shredder, which will remove many found problems, with surety. When you spybot gets cracked from access violations, if you run as the administrator, you will know, because your secure shredder dissappears, or your check registry feature is somehow flawed.

Let me ask a general question... Do Macs have these same problems? I've only worked with windows, and well over 100 fresh installs & repairs, 10 years later, on many computers, it's still just as time consuming & tedious to troubleshoot anything malicous.
