There isn't anything current.  The last good book on MSI technology was written in 2000 and has been out of print for a while.  You'll have to get a copy of the User Manuals from the specific technology you want to learn; Flexera, Microsoft, Citrix, etc.

Forget reading tool vendor's manuals. They will teach you next to nothing about Windows Installer. Without knowing the fundamentals, you'll struggle to do anything beyond basic packaging with any of the tools.

It takes some digging out but Phil Wilson's "The Definitive Guide To Windows Installer" can be located as a free download. There's also a similarly-titled eBook available from Realtime Publishers. As for sequencing, the tools available now make it so simple, it's hard to recommend anything of worth.
