KACE custom field modification?

Hi All,

I plan on using one of the custom field values in KACE to post tracking URLs for our hardware shipments. My idea is to use custom field 1 set to field type=link with only the ability for owners to modify, with users view only. My question being is that URLs generated by shipping companies are excessively long, does anyone know of a method I can use in KACE (without deferring to a URL shortener) that will either rename the collected URL after the shipment number OR a supplied generic name such as "tracking info"?

Or alternatively, can the URL field type html be configured to collect a URL and optionally a name if supplied?

Thanks!

  • Would this work?

    Example:

    https://someVeryVeryVeryLongURL.SomeWhere/SomePage.php&someAttribute=SomeVariable.....

What if, on that machine you created a host entry for someVeryVeryVeryLongURL.SomeWhere to point to the correct ip and configured your scanner to output URLs using a shorter address like https://SURL/SomePage.php&someAttribute=SomeVariable.....

That being said, I suspect your probably is probably not in the domain name but rather in the variables of the URL.

    Just a thought. - Jbr32 8 years ago
    • Hi Jbr32, I'm not entirely following your comment though it might be because there's a disconnect since I didn't specify our process. We aren't using scan guns and barcodes to capture tracking data and then export the info, it's a bit more basic.

Our process is logging into shipping courier website, creating a shipment, printing the label, and then shipping the supplies. We copy the tracking info and post it to our tickets so users can follow tracking updates, as well as using it as a form of documentation for our techs and users who don't have shipping accounts to review ship histories.

There actually isn't an issue with the way links are used in the K1000, I was just hoping to discover a cleaner way of presenting them by using the custom_fields.

Thanks for your response, if you have a better suggestion that may be client side and not through the K1000, I'd be happy to hear it. - rrjustin 8 years ago
