I am currently trying to deploy the above as an msi via GPO.  I have followed the suggestions on the package knowledge base Java Runtime Environment in particular the first article.
However, when I run j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe /A to extract the msi to the network, it does this but only as a small 607k msi file?
When I examine the msi using InstallShield Tuner it has very few files and reg entries - am I doing something wrong?
I note under common files it creates large zip files called core1.zip, core2.zip etc.  Should I be extracting these somewhere?

What's more, when I edit the following values using a transform:

WEBSTARTICON - set to 0 - removes webstart icon on desktop

JAVAUPDATE - set to 0

I test and get the following error:

Product: Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_04 -- Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.  Action unzipcore1, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI54F.tmp, command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Update\Base Images\j2re1.4.2-b28\core1.zip" "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\\" "C:\DOCUME~1\0144\LOCALS~1\Temp\java_install.log" [8|]

Any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed that it also worked per machine. So I guess I will ignore the problem that it won't deploy with normal users, because we are going to deploy it per machine... But it would be nice if someone knew this problem and how to fix it.. who know, it will problem happen more times....

FWIW, I also wound up repackaging this.  I ran into a few problems while doing so but eventually got it to compile and test cleanly.  I wish I had saved my Wise notes somewhere but didn't, otherwise I'd have posted them here.

I get the same problem med version 1.4.6_06.

But... I have the folders Common files and program files along with the msi-file.

But I only got the error:

Product: Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2.06 -- Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.  Action unzipcore1, location: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSI9.tmp, command: "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Update\Base Images\j2re1.4.2-b28\core1.zip" "C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\\" "C:\DOCUME~1\tester\LOCALS~1\Temp\java_install.log"

When I try to deploy it to a user that aint admin... If I deploy it through the AD to a admin user it works perfect. The only thing I have done is a transform with Wise 5.5 where I change following properties:

1. JAVAUPDATE = 0 (Disable Auto update
2. IEXPLORER = 1 (Enables Java in Internet Explorer)
3. WEBSTARTICON = 0 (removes the icon from the desktop)

I had trouble when trying to package this before.

What it is is, if you examine the MSI carefully, it contains several zip files which are unpacked via a series of custom actions. It is fairly difficult to edit this via a transform because as you say, there are only a few files listed. Its a pain to try and edit the custom actions, which i wouldnt suggest you do anyway.

The solution I was forced into was to capture the Vendor MSI, which I know is against best practices, but you have to have some way of editing the app to suit your requirements.

There are also supposed to be "common" and "program files" folders, that is where the data is for the MSI. Then you need to create a quick MST file with Tuner. View the link for the properties to change via Tuner.
