Just as stephen36 said, the content of your lost files won't be erased immediately. Just the directory of your files has been deleted. Therefore, you can use data recovery software to get them back.

Lost files will never be erased instantly from the stored drive. Until it is not overwritten with new data, you can restore them with the help of Mac recovery utility. Last time when i had lost my project files, my friend advised me to use some data recovery utility and that helped me to get my file back. So better use a recovery tool to recover your files.
