DESKTOP SHORTCUTS STILL REMAINS
The Desktop shortcuts fro ArcGIS 8 still remains after uninstall. i used .bat file to uninstall ArcGIS 8 and then install ArcGIS 9.1. The installation works fine but the desktop shortcuts for ArcGIS 8 still remains.

If this is an MSI installation is the desktop shortcut located in the Shortcut table?
Also, are there any conditions on the component holding this shortcut?

put one or more entries in the RemoveFile table of the new app, with InstallMode value 2 (remove when installing), pointing to the old version shortcuts on the desktop

If you used a batch file for the installation why don't you just use a delete the .lnk from the desktop in the batch file....
For some stupid reason, it seems that package developers are using custom actions to setup the shortcuts - unless it is specifically handled in the custom action(or another custom action) the MSI will not remove the shortcut on it's own.
I would suggest that during your testing of applications you include the removal of your product - That way you can know ahead of time if the desktop icon is going to be left and change the MSI prior to deploying it..
