application won't stay open

Hello all,

I'm having a slight problem w/ an MSI for DynaComm/Elite. I don't believe any of the files are missing from my package. But after I install my package and launch the application, I only get a 1-2 second flash of it; it closes immediately afterwards. Please help!

Ann,

FileMon and RegMon are your friends in situations like these. See what they tell you.

One thing that can cause this is if registry keys that hold license information were not included in the package. Some Adobe apps are like this; if the app doesn't see those keys upon execution, it just flashed and closes.

bad example, since Adobe will tell you its not installed correctly and that you should re-install it when you deploy the package with faulty or no user registration... see other posts on appdeploy regarding this issue.

However, this is not about Adobe .. sure, filemon and regmon are fine utils but why start of by using 3rd part utils before checking what seems nearest

Adobe PageMaker 7 can exhibit the behavior Ann described ( http://www.appdeploy.com/packages/detail.asp?id=385 ), and I have seen the same with a few other apps. That is why I offered it as a something to look at.

There are also things you can do with RegMon and FileMon to make analysis faster. See MSIMaker's tip at http://itninja.com/blog/view/command-line-printer-control-in-2000/xp8

Thank you all for your suggestions. I do not think its the problem w/ the license b/c when I install it from CD, I'm never prompted for anything. My Team Lead has also sat down w/ me and we've run through both FileMon and RegMon w/ no luck. I will look into the even viewer and post a follow up.

Thanks again,
Ann

Ann,

You may need to go through several cycles of opening permissions and re-running FileMon and RegMon to catch everything. I have also come across apps that do not show everything the first time through.

Most applications display this behaviour if they do not find the environment variables.

Check the env. variables in the system

I presume you mean for a local workstation administrator this is the case, or this only occurs as a regular user?

Hi There!

They are right.. It could be a path environment variable.. or INI or registries missing.. a good technique to find a solution to your problem is using a snapshot.. Try to use a snaphot software that could monitor the installation like InstallWatch Pro 2.5 InstallWatchPro, free software..

Install first your created MSI then run a before snapshot, then install the native installer for DynaComm/Elite.. then go to the after snapshot and check the viewer in InstallWatch.. Check if you're missing something.. This is better if you're tired of RegMOn or FileMon..

Hope this help.. [:D]

Try running the application with administrative privilages to determine if it is a permissions issue.
