New group policy / ADMX template deletes Google Chrome bookmarks

Yesterday I was working on preparing a package to deploy Google Chrome 52. I installed it on my machine over an older version and everything was fine. Then I imported the most recent chrome.admx template onto our AD/group policy server and configured it to be the same as past versions. After applying that policy to my machine it deleted all the Google Chrome bookmarks. I seem to remember having the same issue a year or two back when we deployed a new version of chrome (it's the gov, we never update browsers lol) and we had to tell all the users to manually backup their bookmarks, which is obviously a hassle. Does anyone know why the bookmarks get deleted or if there is a specific policy setting that causes Chrome to wipe out the bookmarks?
